Rodolfo Rodriguez is a 92-year-old legal United States resident who lives in Los Angeles. Rodriguez enjoys taking a stroll around his neighborhood every evening. On the 4th of July, as the nation celebrated Independence Day, a Day when immigrants seeking freedom declared themselves free of British rule, his nightly walk turned violent.
As Rodriguez walked near his home, he accidentally bumped into a 4-year-old girl as he tried to pass her on the sidewalk to continue his walk. According to police, the little girl’s mother shoved the 92-year-old to the ground and began beating him in the face with a brick. A person passing by stopped and called the police and recorded the vicious attack.
After the passerby called the police, four men ran up to the incident, instead of helping the severely injured senior, they began kicking him on the ground while the girl’s mother screamed at him. She shouted, “Go back to your country, why are you here, bad things.”
Rodriguez sustained multiple broken ribs and a broken cheekbone. He is covered in severe bruises all over his body. Rodriguez does not speak English and still does not know why he was attacked by the group of angry racists.
Erik Mendoza is Rodriguez’s grandson. He said of the attack, “Who would do this to anybody?” He continued, “A 92-year-old senior citizen, what can he do to anybody? There’s no harm that he meant.”
A GoFundMe has been set up to help pay Rodriguez’s extensive medical bills. The initial goal for the campaign was $15,000. By Monday, almost $40,000 had been donated.
Los Angeles Sheriff’s investigators are looking for the 5 attackers. Deputy D’Angelo Robinson said, “We are concerned, especially with the type of crime they committed. There was what appears to be a 4-year-old child there who witnessed the entire thing. We can’t have these kind of people like that out in the streets.”
