Last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel tested Trump’s “Buy American” slogan. The late night host purchased merchandise from the Trump Store, which is currently run by the president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.
“I’m sure Eric and Donald Jr. take this American thing very seriously. These guys are red, white and blue to the core. They’re like a couple of flags wearing hair gel, these two.”
But, of course, when it came down to the products Kimmel purchased from the “Trump Store” — a pattern emerged. A very familiar pattern. As Jimmy Kimmel read the labels from the products he bought, it was clear that the overwhelming majority of the merchandise came from countries outside the United States. Instead of using US production, the Trump Store products were produced in countries such as China, Thailand, and Peru.
This isn’t the first time this president has come under fire for shaming the practice of outsourcing after having enjoyed decades of doing it himself. It’s not even the first time Trump has been criticized for still outsourcing after he became president. Had he followed precedent and built a wall between himself and all things Trump Organization by availing himself of a blind trust, it might be another story. But President Trump is still able to access those assets while in office — which is pretty much without precedent.
What was even more worrisome than the obviously outsourced goods — there were goods that didn’t even label a country of origin. I think we can assume these products were not made in the USA. If they had been, surely there would be prominent labeling to call attention to those products.
If they are indeed imports, the law requires that they be labeled with the respective country of original.
Jimmy read from the US Customs website:
“Failure to properly report product origin can result in substantial penalties. Companies can face up to $500,000 in fines per violation or ‘double’ the loss or gain from the violation related to these violations.”
So I guess this is one of those laws that Emperor Trump has decided applies to everyone but him.
