More information about the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe of President Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, continues to surface as the raid makes waves across the country.
According to The Hill, during the raid, the FBI sought out documents regarding payments to two women who claim to have had affairs with Donald Trump.
Sources close to the investigation told The New York Times that the FBI agents raiding Cohen’s office were looking for information on former Playboy model Karen McDougal and adult film star Stormy Daniels. Both women allege that they have had affairs with Trump, and the FBI aimed to find proof of that during their widespread raid of Cohen’s home and office.
McDougal recently sued American Media Inc. (AMI), the parent company of the National Enquirer, claiming she was misled by AMI and her lawyer about the deal. The New York Times reported that AMI paid McDougal $150,000 for her story about her alleged affair with Donald Trump and subsequently withheld it from publication.
Stormy Daniels was reportedly paid $130,000 by Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen, and the payment was reportedly part of a nondisclosure agreement that was dispensed mere days before the 2016 election. Cohen has admitted to paying Stormy Daniels, however, he denies that a payment of the sort violated campaign finance laws. Last week, President Trump spoke publicly about the scandal for the first time. He denied knowing anything about the payment.
The Times reported that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein personally approved the FBI raid, which led to seizure of emails, tax documents and records from Michael Cohen’s home and office. Cohen is being investigated for possible tax fraud, bank fraud and campaign finance violations. Along with their discoveries about Cohen’s potential criminality, President Trump will likely be implicated in the fiasco as well.
We previously reported that Trump is skipping diplomatic commitments to sit at home and stew about the events unfolding. The so called “witch hunt” has sent the president in a tizzy, and this is likely just the tip of the iceberg.
